    Japanese painting (絵画, kaiga, also gadō 画道) is one of the oldest and most highly refined of the Japanese visual arts, encompassing a wide variety of genres and with the history of Japanese arts in general, the long history of Japanese painting exhibits synthesis and competition between native Japanese aesthetics and the adaptation of imported ideas, mainly from Chinese.   With the 14th century and the decline of traditional Buddhism, sculpture ceased to play a major role in Japanese art. The only original creations of the later centuries are the No masks, which originated during the 15th century in the Muromachi period and continue to be made to the present day, and the small netsuke carvings, representing all kinds of legendary and folk figures, which served.

    It ties the art both to its historical context and to the foreign influences that have been so critical to Japanese art. The series format is somewhat limiting, in that a book on the whole history of Japanese art, and which covers all the arts - painting, sculpture, architecture, manga, ceramics, etc - /5. Its published and unpublished resources—in the fields of Asian art and archaeology, conservation, painting, sculpture, architecture, drawings, prints, manuscripts, books, and photography—are available to museum staff, outside researchers, and the visiting public. About half of the collection consists of works in Chinese or Japanese.
